Empathy is central to my work as a therapist. It helps me see the issues from the client’s perspective. While I engage empathetically with their stories, I avoid imposing solutions or interpretations, ensuring that the journey remains theirs.
For example, if a client shares recurring feelings of shame or self-doubt, I may reflect on patterns or themes in what they’ve expressed, but I do so in a way that invites exploration rather than prescribing meaning. I recently worked with a client who felt “not good enough” in many areas of life. Instead of diagnosing the issue, I encouraged them to reflect on what these feelings meant to them and where they might have originated. This approach helped them uncover the connection between these beliefs and earlier life experiences, allowing for deeper insight and understanding.
Maintaining this balance requires sensitivity and care. I am mindful not to steer the client’s process and to ensure that my reflections align with their lived reality. I frequently check in with them, ensuring my observations resonate and allowing space for their interpretation.
Ultimately, the therapeutic journey is theirs to own. My role is to guide and support while helping them recognise that the power for growth lies within themselves.
